Square Counterflow Closed Circuit Cooling Tower is

The square counterflow closed circuit cooling tower is a closed-circuit cooling tower in which the coolant (the substance circulating inside the closed coil) does not come into direct contact with air inside the cooling tower. It circulates inside the coil tubes and utilizes the latent heat of evaporation for cooling.
Thus, it is called the closed circuit cooler as the coolant is sealed. It has the same structure with an air-cooled heat exchanger that the coolant is enclosed. But the key difference is that the circulating water is sprayed to the exterior of the coil pipes where coolant passes to cool the coolant inside the coil tubes. Therefore, the biggest strength of this cooling tower is that it supplements the flaws of the open cooling tower and the air-cooled heat exchangers.

Structure of Square Counterflow Closed Circuit Cooling Tower

The external air enters through Louvers by the fan installed at the top which passes through between the internal coil tubes where the heat exchange takes place. The coolant is circulated through numerous coils from the inlet (coil tube header) and then circulated to the process through the outlet (coil tube header). In addition, the spray circulating pump evenly sprays the coolant from the lower tank of the cooling tower to the coil tube assembly through the distribution part. It serves to transport heat away from the circulating water by cooling from the latent heat of evaporation as the coolant comes in contact with air.

Features and Strengths
  • The square design allows side-by-side installation in an orderly manner.

  • As the coolant passes through closed coils, it is not contaminated from direct contact with the air and the separation of circulating water and coolant is highly effective in preventing water pollution.

  • The air inlet covered completely with PVC prevents coolant from splashing outside and keeps foreign substances from entering the cold water basin.

  • It has a lower operating cost compared to the air-cooled heat exchangers due to its efficient design and the fan stack and wide filler area keep low internal pressure, ultimately reducing power consumption.

  • The outdoor enclosed motor is used as it is often used in places with high humidity.

  • Reducing turbulence and exposure to sunlight in the lower rank and reducing water drift to within 0.02% can lead to a reduction of coolant.

  • The structure of the eliminator allows easy inspection.

  • The material of coolant distribution pipes is PVC and the low spray pressure ensures good distribution of coolant.
